Studio News July 2025

July 28th, 2025

We have all been busy bees since our last post. I have invited some of our artists to share their goings-on with you, so grab your cuppa and enjoy the read…

Corinne’s News

First up, I’m thrilled to share that I’ve released a brand new articulated paper doll on Etsy: The Fox Fairy. She’s a whimsical little creature with delicate woodland vibes and a touch of mischief — the perfect blend of cute and mysterious. As always, you’re welcome to come make your very own Fox Fairy at the Art Café. It’s such a fun project to do with friends over a cup of tea and some creative chatter. She’s already proving quite popular with both kids and grown-up kids alike!

We also had an unforgettable Life Drawing night this month. The incredibly talented Sydney-based singer and dancer, Lou, joined us as our model — and wow, did she bring the glamour! Decked out in a stunning burlesque costume, Lou struck dramatic poses and completely transformed the atmosphere. It felt like we were sketching scenes from a golden-age cabaret. I pulled out my pastels for the occasion, and I must say, I’m really happy with how they turned out. There’s something so satisfying about capturing movement and energy in pastels. Still touching up my drawings byt here’s a pic of our fabulous Model.

A special moment this month was the very generous donation I received from the family of Royce, a fellow artist who recently passed away. I feel truly honoured to now have some of his treasured art supplies in the studio. His well-loved easels and beautiful pastels have already been put to good use — and they’ll continue to support the creative journeys of many more artists to come. Thank you, Royce and family, for passing on your tools and your spirit.

Earlier this month, I also got my hands gloriously muddy with a little stoneware clay play. I’ve been sculpting a series of mini mansions — each one a quirky little dwelling with its own personality. Some are grand, some are crooked, some look like they’ve sprung straight from a storybook. I had such a lovely time letting my imagination run wild while building them. They’re currently drying and getting ready for their next phase: firing and painting! I’m planning to feature them during the Art Trail 2025, so stay tuned for sneak peeks as they come to life with colour.

That’s the latest from my little creative world. As always, thank you for supporting the studio, coming along to classes, and being part of this vibrant community. Whether you’re buying art, drawing, painting, snipping, sticking, sipping tea or just stopping by to say hi — you make this space what it is. Thank you for supporting me!

Jacqui’s News

Hi friends, Things have been moving in really exciting directions! It’s been one of those seasons where everything starts to click, and I’m finally feeling like I’ve found my flow as an artist. There’s a rhythm to the work that feels natural, joyful, and deeply personal.

Over the past few months, I’ve had some wonderful opportunities to travel with my art, including a visit to Orange, which was a highlight. Orange has such a creative, down-to-earth vibe. My work was accepted in The Corner Store Gallery in Orange and was sold out in a matter of days! It’s always inspiring to bring my work to new places and connect with people who experience it with fresh eyes. Thanks so much to Madeline Young for taking me on!

Back home in the Highlands, another exciting development has been working more closely with local interior designers. Suzie Anderson and Darling James have the most beautiful stores in the Highlands and it’s been amazing to see how my paintings can complement a thoughtfully designed space.

Creatively, I’ve been drawn more and more to larger commissions, particularly those inspired by the English countryside—rolling green hills, cozy dwellings, rivers flowing, weathered fences, and soft skies. These paintings have allowed me to slow down and sink into the details. They feel like a walk through the fields: peaceful, layered, and full of small discoveries. Still lifes and intimate scenes of the natural world have also become a quiet love of mine—vases of garden blooms, baskets of home grown produce, or a windowsill bathed in afternoon light. There’s something timeless and grounding in those simple moments, and I’m leaning into capturing that gentle stillness on canvas. More than ever, I feel like I’ve found my rhythm. My work is soft, nature-inspired, and made to bring joy and calm into a space. Whether it’s a cottage kitchen, a cosy corner of a room, or an outside garden potting table or fresco, my hope is that each painting feels like home.

Nat’s News

So, life is kind of flashing before my eyes right now – in a good way!

Earlier this year I opened my own gallery wall at Dirty Janes in Canberra. It’s a bit of a creative buffet; from sculpture to paintings to my newest obsession, mini collages.  The cost of living is tough, so I wanted to make sure everyone could take home a piece of the wonderful and weird. All my minis are $35, come framed, and are available as badges or in 2D formats. Quirky and cool? Yes, please.

My landscape painting journey has had its wins and learning curves. I’ve spent time reflecting on past works that really resonated with me, and I’ve woven those elements into new pieces. I’ve also been reworking older paintings that didn’t quite hit the mark, using their underpaintings as a base has given them new life and unexpected depth.

The Paper Flower Project, my most ambitious artwork yet. I came up with this concept as a response to how algorithms used by social media and search engines can push people into ways of thinking that can be harmful or isolating. I also wanted to address how a lack of information can make us afraid and uneasy to embrace members of the community who are different to our normal. To do this I needed to provide anonymity to participants, so that we can truly see the lives of the people in our community. What are our triumphs and what are our downfalls, and with that knowledge what can we do better? To do this I have been running free workshops and events teaching people how to make flowers, and allowing them (if they choose) to anonymously share their messages for use in the main work.

The final exhibiting piece will be a life like paper flower garden that people will be able to walk through and relax on a garden bench. Each flower that is made contains the stories shared by people who have either attended a Paper flower event or workshop or have filled out an anonymous survey online. The type of flower and its health is represented by the content that has been shared. Those messages are then projected on the walls of the exhibition to give people an opportunity to consider their views and values. And hopefully walk away understanding more about others than what they did when they entered. My goal is to provide a safe and tangible way for people to be able to ask difficult questions, give advice based off lived experience and explain why it is they feel the way they do.

I’ve got free workshops coming up with Creative Space at Hill Top on August 11, plus others through Wollongong Council libraries, their multicultural services, and teen programs. You’ll also find me at Floriade on October 11–12. If you'd like to host your own Paper Flower workshop, get in touch! There's no cost to your group, and I can tailor sessions for all ages – from 8 to 80 and beyond (I also hold a current WWCN and have insurance).

My final piece of news for now is that I will be at the Canberra Art Fair from the 4th to the 6th of September. I will be exhibiting my collage and mixed media work. All my works will be 1 of 1 print on artist quality fine cotton rag. They come signed and have a certificate of authenticity. I only ever create one print of each so if you love one get in quick!
